"Our lives are eternal, without beginning or end. We appeared in this world with a mission to spread the seven characters of Nam-myoho-renge-kyo to all humankind. I myself awakened to this reality. Seen in this light, we ourselves are the true followers of the Bodhisattvas of the Earth." (Human Revolution, Volume 1, page 178)
"Don't doubt the Gohonzon, no matter what. As long as you keep practicing, you'll definitely reach enlightenment and enjoy absolute happiness. That's the Daishonin's teaching. I know how hard it is for you right now, but don't doubt. Hang on to your faith. That's what'll decide victory or defeat in your lives. Win or lose, it's all up to your practice. How about it? Can you carry on?" (Human Revolution, Volume 1, page 152)
"Buddhism is win or lose, so faith comes first." (Human Revolution, Volume 1, page 93)

"As members of the SGI, our mentor in faith is...

... of course, Daisaku Ikeda." When I first heard those words in a recent (December 2007 Kosen-rufu gongyo or January 2008 New Year's) SGI meeting I popped my head up and said to myself, "What! They're telling me who my mentor will be?"

As a member of the SGI since 1989, I've always read Ikeda's guidance and tried to follow it, but I always felt more of a connection to Josei Toda. I've recently found Ikeda's guidance somewhat "fluffy," sort of like a marshmallow, whereas Toda is to the point.

I can honestly say that I resent being told who my mentor in faith will be. That is a decision that I will make.
"Don't be impatient. Since you have embraced the Gohonzon, your situation will definitely improve. There's no need to worry. Sure there will be hard times, times when you feel like crying. But as long as you have the Gohonzon, your life will become bright and joyful." (For Today & Tomorrow, page 386)

"Those of you who have problems or sufferings, pray earnestly! Buddhism is a deadly serious win-or-lose struggle." (For Today & Tomorrow, page 364)
"The Buddha is filled with compassion, but it is hard for us to show compassion. So we must have courage instead." (For Today & Tomorrow, page 246)
"Be courageous in faith! No matter what other people may say, advance boldly! Lead confident lives! Make courage the Gakkai's eternal emblem!" (For Today & Tomorrow, page 56)
